Week 5: Six Edges and a Test at Kinnick

Six model Edges, the case against each pick, and a closer look at Ohio State–Iowa. Georgia scoring trends and USC home totals put the numbers in context.

Georgia can win comfortably and still get us over the total. BYU can win in Fort Worth and still cash a TCU ticket. That’s where this weekend’s card starts: with the number we’re betting and what each team needs to do to beat it.

Six of these seven matchups carry an Edge in Downfield Data’s latest published run. Ohio State–Iowa gets its own look as one of the weekend’s biggest games, with a directional opinion rather than an Edge or Lean. Picks below use DraftKings lines returned by our market feed Friday morning, October 2; the published model capture is from Thursday at 11:02 a.m. ET. All seven games kick off Saturday, October 3. Times are Eastern.

Alabama at Mississippi State: Under 60.5

Noon | Model total: 56.19 | Edge

Why I like it: The model projects this total more than four points below the market. Mississippi State has shown it can disrupt an SEC offense, holding South Carolina to minus-15 yards over its first four possessions of the second half in their meeting. That’s the kind of stretch this under needs: pressure that forces punts and keeps the quarterbacks from trading touchdowns on every possession. Mississippi State defensive report

Why it loses: Alabama’s last two games finished 50-36 and 49-18. Both cleared this number, and the 36 points Florida State scored are a direct challenge to trusting the Crimson Tide to contain another productive offense. Mississippi State already put 41 on South Carolina behind four Kamario Taylor touchdown passes. There’s a credible shootout case here, and the model is asking us to bet against it. My pick: Under 60.5. I’m following the model here, with more concern about explosive plays than in the other totals on this card.

Vanderbilt at Georgia: Over 50.5

12:45 p.m. | Model total: 58.36

Why I like it: This 50.5 total would have cleared in all four Georgia games this season, with combined scores of 66, 90, 62 and 54. Vanderbilt is averaging 28.25 points per game, and the last two meetings between these teams finished with 55 points in 2022 and 57 in 2023. Both would also have cleared Saturday’s number. Those are comparisons against 50.5, rather than records against each game’s original betting total. Georgia game notes, Vanderbilt results

There’s useful home context, too. Regular-season SEC visitors have averaged 19.63 points in eight games in Athens since the start of 2024, through last weekend. Georgia scored 45 and 41 in its first two SEC games this year. Vanderbilt doesn’t need to match its season average for this over to have a path. Georgia 2024 results, 2025 results, 2026 game notes

Why it loses: Georgia’s defense is also the strongest argument against this pick. Opponents average just 50.5 rushing yards per game, and 35 of the 53 points Georgia has allowed came in the fourth quarter. Vanderbilt could spend most of the afternoon unable to sustain a drive. A 38-10 Georgia win would look comfortable on television and lose this bet. Georgia game notes

My pick: Over 50.5. Watch whether Vanderbilt can produce first downs early. Depending on late touchdowns from a beaten team is a rough way to spend an afternoon.

Louisville at NC State: NC State +3.5

3:30 p.m. | Model margin: NC State by 0.61

Why I like it: Our model has this almost even, and we’re getting more than a field goal at home. NC State ran for 206 yards and converted 11 of 17 third downs against Appalachian State last week. That’s a workable path here: sustain possessions, keep the offense out of obvious passing situations, and give yourself a chance late. NC State box score

Why it loses: That same game included a 21-point lead disappearing. Appalachian State threw for 317 yards, and NC State needed a late touchdown after the score reached 31-31. The Wolfpack can move the ball. Trusting them to avoid the turnover or coverage mistake that turns a close game into a two-score loss is the harder part. NC State recap

My pick: NC State +3.5. I’m backing the run game to keep this close at Carter-Finley, with the secondary carrying most of the risk.

Ohio State at Iowa: Iowa +14.5, directional opinion

3:30 p.m. broadcast window | Model margin: Ohio State by 7.77 | No Edge or Lean

Why I like the Iowa side: Our model projects a much tighter game than this spread. Iowa enters 4-0, leads the country at eight points allowed per game, and ranks 10th in total defense at 239.8 yards allowed. Those early opponents don't represent Ohio State’s offense, but the defense gives Iowa a plausible way to keep the score within reach. Iowa game notes

Why it loses: Two of Iowa’s wins were shutouts of Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa, which help explain that defensive average. At Michigan, the Hawkeyes needed a kickoff-return touchdown and a 91-yard drive capped by a touchdown as time expired to win 20-19. That was a strong finish. It also shows how narrow their path can become when the offense struggles for most of the afternoon. Iowa game notes

My read: Iowa +14.5 is the model’s direction, but this matchup doesn’t qualify for an Edge or Lean under our current signal rules. Watch whether Iowa can sustain drives before it needs another fourth-quarter rescue.

BYU at TCU: TCU +6.5

7 p.m. | Model margin: BYU by 4.40

Why I like it: TCU has allowed 12.5 points per game through four games, ranking 14th nationally. The Horned Frogs are 3-1 against ranked visitors under Sonny Dykes. Those numbers support a competitive home game, and our projection has BYU winning by fewer points than the spread requires. TCU preview

Why it loses: TCU is still 2-2 despite that defensive average. The defense can play well and leave the offense with work it can’t finish. BYU enters 3-0 and comes off its bye, while TCU is trying to avoid an 0-2 conference start. Our projected cushion against the spread is only 2.1 points. One stalled red-zone possession can erase it. BYU game week, BYU schedule

My pick: TCU +6.5. I trust the defense to keep the Frogs involved. Their ability to finish drives is what decides whether that trust pays off.

Washington at USC: Under 58.5

7:30 p.m. | Model total: 52.46

Why I like it: Washington has shown it can end possessions, holding Washington State without a third-down conversion in 11 attempts in the opener. Our model puts this game roughly six points below the available total. We can survive some scoring: a 31-27 finish still lands under. Washington game notes

USC’s home games against Big Ten opponents since the start of 2025 have averaged 54.83 combined points with Oregon included (six games) and 52.20 without Oregon (five games). Four of the six totals fell below Saturday’s 58.5, including four of five not including last week’s high-powered shootout against Oregon. Both averages support the under, though Oregon’s result belongs in the assessment of how this USC defense can get beaten. USC 2025 results, Washington’s USC preview

Why it loses: USC just allowed 41 points to Oregon, and Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr. ranks eighth nationally in total offense. Washington’s eight takeaways also cut both ways for an under. Ending a drive helps; handing your offense a short field can put points on the board quickly. This is Washington’s first road game, too. The home sample only tells us so much. Washington game notes

My pick: Under 58.5. Watch where the scoring drives start. Repeated short fields would make this uncomfortable fast.

Fresno State at Washington State: Over 45.5

9:30 p.m. | Model total: 51.71

Why I like it: We need 46 points, and our model projects nearly 52. Washington State’s 1-3 record includes games against Washington, Kansas State and Arizona. There’s a reasonable case that the early schedule makes the Cougars look worse than they’ll be against conference opponents. A 27-20 game is enough. Washington State preview

Why it loses: The offensive improvement still has to happen. Washington State managed 100 rushing yards against Washington and 101 against Kansas State. Its 48-point win over Duquesne included two punt-return touchdowns, so treating that score as proof of a reliable offense would be generous. Fresno State arrives 3-1, and a game dominated by punts could keep both teams below the model’s expectation. Washington State preview

My pick: Over 45.5. In the first quarter, watch whether Washington State can sustain ordinary drives without needing a return touchdown or a short field to get started.
